Jikiden Reiki

Reiki is form of gentle body-work or hand healing which originates from Japan. It involves simply placing my hands on or above different areas of the body and letting them rest there with the intention of tuning in to the subtle sensations felt under the hands. The recipient simply rests knowing that they are being cared for and held at the deepest level. The power of touch, stillness and deep relaxation can enable energy to flow more freely within the body, facilitate the natural healing processes and help restore mental and physical well-being. Reiki is particularly useful for stress reduction - how often do we lie completely still for one hour with someone caring for us. If our energy is low we are less likely to have the resources to deal with life. Regular self-care through Reiki can give us the energy to live our lives with more fullness, resilience and stability.

A session normally lasts 60 minutes and involves lying clothed and supported on a massage table under warm blankets. I may play gentle music and burn essential oils to help you relax. During the treatment I will place my hands gently on your torso or limbs and I may change the positioning of the hands several times as the session progresses depending on what I find. If you have an area of particular concern e.g. a sore back, I may spend more time on this area. All you have to do is lie back, rest and relax. Clients often report feeling deeply relaxed afterwards and some may have noticed different sensations where I place my hands on the body e.g. heat, coolness or tingling. However it is a very individual experience and no reaction is the same. I personally have found it very interesting to pay attention to how you feel in the day or days afterwards as often your body tells you what it needs to come back into balance e.g. an early night or making that decision you have been deliberating over.

My Personal Experience with Reiki

I turned to Reiki when I was supporting a good friend of mine through her journey with breast cancer and latterly her journey towards the end of her life. I desperately felt that I needed support from a therapist with the grief, sadness and loss that I was feeling but didn't feel strong enough to have bodywork like a massage nor talk to a counsellor. The peace that I found through Reiki was quite incredible. As a massage therapist myself with many years of experience I admit that I often felt quite sceptical about Reiki however as with many things sometimes you just have to try it yourself to believe it. I found that allowing someone to care for you with gentle positive touch and their deep presence has profound effects on the body's natural healing capacities. We are all made up of energy and have energy pulsating through our bodies so it now makes deep sense to me that we stop and slow down in order to sense and tune into this subtle part of us that often needs much more attention than we give it.

I enjoyed my experience of Reiki so much that I decided to train as a Reiki Practitioner in 2015, completing Level 1 Usui Reiki with Marjory Watt and Level 1 & 2 Jikiden Reiki with Gisela Stewart. Jikiden Reiki is Reiki in its traditional form straight from the founding origins in Japan in the early 1900s and is focused principally on practical, grounded and compassionate hand healing therapy.
